The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself to the employer. It is your chance to summarize and sell yourself in a way that cannot always be accomplished with the outline format of a resume. Cover letters also give you a chance to personalize your contact with specific companies, rather than relying on an all-purpose resume to catch someone's eye.

Here are some tips on writing cover letters that will help you put your best foot forward - before you even meet with a perspective employer face-to-face.

Elaborate on your resume:
Use the cover letter as a chance to fill-in-the-blanks of your resume. A bulleted list can only serve as an overview of your skills and talents. A cover letter can explain and add depth to your qualifications and experience.
Show-off your writing skills:
So you say that written communication is one of your strong points - prove it! Use your cover letter as an opportunity to show how well you can express yourself on paper.
I'm your man!
Be sure to take the opportunity to describe how you fit the qualifications for the position you are seeking. Perspective employers need to be able to envision you as part of the team.
Contact Information:
Include your mailing address, your telephone number, and even your email address. Do not miss out on an interview because someone didn't know how or where to find you!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Don't forget to thank the person for taking the time to look over your information.
